Yellowknife, NT – August 6, 2024 – Noramco, a leading provider of telecommunications infrastructure solutions, is pleased to announce a significant investment in KatloTech Communications Ltd.’s Phase 1 of their ambitious 315 km fiber optic network project in the Northwest Territories. This strategic investment will provide essential fiber optic cable and materials required for developing and deploying the high-capacity network, which aims to enhance connectivity, support economic growth, and introduce redundancy and competition in the region.

Currently, the only fiber optic line for the NWT and Yukon runs along an area of the NWT where forest fires have been prominent leaving the NWT with significant network outages on its fiber optic for the territory.

Lyle Fabian, CEO of KatloTech Communications Ltd., expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating,

“I am thrilled to have Noramco’s support for our Phase 1 fiber optic network project. This collaboration is a major milestone in bringing state-of-the-art telecommunications to the Northwest Territories, benefiting local communities, businesses, and public services. By introducing competition and redundancy, we aim to enhance network resilience and national security. Our project is about more than connectivity; it’s about fostering long-term economic development and sustainable growth for Indigenous communities.”

Shaine Nobert, VP of Noramco, commented on the investment,

“Noramco is dedicated to supporting innovative projects that drive technological and community development. We are proud to partner with KatloTech Communications Ltd. on the Phase 1 fiber optic network project. This initiative will enhance connectivity, promote competition, and benefit consumers with better services and prices.”

This investment marks the commencement of Phase 1 of a six-phase project aimed at bringing competition and redundancy to the telecommunications infrastructure in the Northwest Territories. Notably, this project represents the first Dene Indigenous privately-owned fiber optic network in the NWT, highlighting a significant achievement for KatloTech and the region.

KatloTech has approached the Federal government seeking support and additional investment for the fiber optic project. Fabian is confident that his company will receive the support it needs from the government,

“KatloTech is aware of Canada’s strategy to contribute to the development of rural infrastructure priorities and we hope that this investment from Noramco shows them that our fiber optic project is right in line with the Government’s broader infrastructure strategy.”
